Going to Singapore via Train

Month of July when we visited Singapore Zoo. It was my first time to visit this beautiful place in Singapore. I heard a lot of positive reviews about this wonderful place as the animals are well taken care of.

My wife actually was given a complimentary ticket to enter Singapore Zoo and River Safari to one of the promotional activities she saw in one of the English newspaper in Malaysia and Singapore. So, since it was a complimentary ticket, we visited this place all the way from Johor Bahru, Malaysia. Sometimes in life it is not all about work. We also need to go out and explore the world that is within our capacity.

Going Inside Singapore Zoo

This place was fantastic. According to their brochure released by their corporate team, the Zoo has about 2,800 animals inhabiting to their man-made tropical rainforest. The zoo is about 26 hectare in land area. According to some sources, this Zoo is also one of the best rainforest Zoo in the World. It is well maintained and the animals are well protected.

Asian Elephants

One of the places where it catches our attention was their Asian Elephants. We managed to see them bathing and playing at their man-made habitat. My son and my wife also managed to feed them with apples, bananas and carrots. My son was quite afraid as he didn’t expect that the elephant was huge. Actually he like elephants and he has a lot of elephants in our house. We named them Yellow Elly, Panpan, Penpen together with his gray pillow elephant.

Upon entering the Zoo, the first animal that we saw was their Cotton Top Tamarin which were currently eating peanuts. The zoo is also noisy with different animal sounds such as monkeys, birds, and you can hear a sound of a water falls that give you feeling as if you are in the middle of a tropical rainforest.

Since the weather is not good on that day, we immediately went to a shaded part where we saw the feeding time of the Proboscis Monkey with the Hornbill and their wild deer. It was raining that time and the animals were very happy. We rested in this place since the rain was very heavy. At the same time my son enjoys his nap.

Anyway, right after the rain stopped, we witness how the flamingos aligned themselves and just enjoying the rain shower within the man-made river for the by Singapore Zoo. We also had the chance to see how a Borneo Orangutans looks likes. Some of the tortoise, Chimpanzees, Cheetah, Warthog, White Lions, Zebra, Giraffe, White Rhinoceros and their African Painted Dog were also in action in their own man-made habitat.

We also managed to enjoy their air conditioned Reptopia place. It is very nice and we had the chance to see up close and personal some of the endangered reptiles likes snakes (different species), lizards, python, cobra, tarantula spiders, piranha, chameleon, and various types of fishes.

They have other animals like the Babirusa, Sun Bear, Cheetah, Malayan Tapir, Red River Hog, Pygmy Hippo but we didn’t manage to see all of them as some of them were already resting after the heavy rain.

The show at the Amphitheater

Another interesting in Singapore Zoo is their animal live shows at their Show Foundation Amphitheater. We enjoyed their animal show. It is really interesting. The show showcases the importance of saving our mother nature specially on our depleting rainforest to protect the habitat of these animals. They also give some trivia to the guest. An example is the difference between monkeys and orangutans.

Since Singapore Zoo is very wide, they have their Unlimited Tram Ride that operates from 8.45 am to 5.30 pm. If I’m not mistaken, the unlimited tram ride is rated at SGD 5.00 for adult and SGD 3.00 for Child.

Inside Reptopia

They have also strollers, wagons, wheelchair and other mobility scooters for rent. For us, since my son is still a todler, we rented out one stroller for the whole day for SGD 9.00.

We started our journey to this place from 11.30 am until 6.30 pm but we didn’t roam around the entire Zoo. It is very wide.

In terms of food, we manage to try their Singapore Zoo’s Signature Westerns food at the Ah Meng restaurant. The restaurant was named to one of the famous orangutan in Singapore Zoo (Ah Meng).

How to get here from Malaysia:

By Train:

Actually we took the KTM train from Johor Bahru to Malaysia. It was only about 5 minutes train ride to stop at Woodlands. From Woodland Train Station (Woodland Town Garden), we took SMRT bus no. 170 to go to After Mandai Rd ( Stop ID: 46091). From there, we went to the other road and took SMRT 927 bus to go straight to Singapore Zoo. It was very easy. Public transport in Singapore is very straightforward. It cost us about SGD3.40 per person for the bus fare (both ride at the SMRT no.170 &927).

When going back to Woodland Train Station, take SMRT Bus No. 927 from Singapore Zoo to go to After Mandai Rd and go the other side of the road. From the other road, take the SMRT Bus No. 197 and take a stop at the Woodlands Train Check Point (Stop Id 45071). The fare rate will still be the same (SGD 3.40).
